7 Natural Remedies for Pest Control at Home
Cockroaches, ants, flies, bed bugs, spiders, and rodents, to name a few, are unwelcome guests in our homes that we all wish to get rid of. These frequent household pests not only cause physical harm but also spread diseases, posing major health risks. While there are many pest control products in the market, natural pest control methods are the simplest, most cost-effective, and safest option.
Safe remedies for keeping out pests
Use peppermint against spiders
Peppermint is a scent that spiders despise. Use peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle for the best results. Spray the solution on the windows and doors, as well as the corners where spider webs can be found. Citrus is also repulsive to them. Combine water and unsweetened lemon or lime juice in a spray bottle. Wipe down countertops with it, or spray down entrances and window sills with it.
Cinnamon
To keep bugs out, grind a few cinnamon sticks and sprinkle the powder in your cupboards, bookshelves, and window sills. Cinnamon essential oil is a natural insect repellent that would be just as effective. You can wipe places where bugs are common with a cotton ball soaked in cinnamon essential oil.
Stop flies with basil
Basil is unappealing to flies. Plant basil pots near doorways and windowsills, as well as on the kitchen counter, to keep them away. Use dried basil leaves instead of a potted basil plant if you don't have the space or the right circumstances to produce one. Fill a little pouch with the leaves and hang it at your doors and windows. To keep the aroma fresh, rub the pouch routinely.
Borax for cockroaches
Use borax (or boric acid) or a mixture of equal parts baking powder and sugar for a low-cost, natural roach bait. The bait is carried back to the colony by the bugs, poisoning the lair. In rooms where roaches appear, sprinkle it along the floorboards. The roaches are attracted to the sugar, but the borax dehydrates and poisons them.
Tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil
Spray a few drops of tea tree oil in a glass of water in your yard and indoors. Pests dislike the fragrance of eucalyptus oil so much that if you use it on a regular basis, you'll notice a significant reduction in their population. A cotton ball soaked in eucalyptus oil can be used to wipe cupboard doors and window panes.
Neem oil
Neem oil is a natural insect repellent that has been in use since millennia to resist insects and mites such as cockroaches, moths, termites, snails, and aphids. To make an effective repellent, mix together warm water and a little soap. Into this solution, add the neem oil while vigorously stirring. Then, into your spray bottle, pour the mixture. To get rid of pests, use this remedy on a regular basis.
Garlic
If you don't mind the smell, garlic can be an effective repellent. Take a few garlic cloves, peel them, and set them on bookshelves to repel vermin. When they dry, make sure to replace them with new ones. You can also use garlic powder. It is particularly effective against cockroaches and ants.
