Window blinds, whether made of vinyl, wood, fabric, or aluminium, are excellent at keeping a room cool, blocking out light, and offering privacy from nosy neighbours, but they also gather dust, pet hair, and other debris. Since blinds come in several styles and materials, the cleaning techniques associated with them vary. If you use the incorrect cleaning method, you risk ruining your blinds, which will impact the aesthetic appeal of your home. Always consult the manufacturer’s directions before washing any sort of blinds or shades. Before using any new cleaning solution across the entire blind, test it in an inconspicuous section first, and always clean from top to bottom.
Take the bottom of the blind in one hand and starting at the top, wipe the blinds with a microfiber cloth. You can also eliminate dust with a soft dusting brush attachment and low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. The procedure is the same for horizontal blinds, the only difference is that you clean it from side to side. To avoid dust falling on places you’ve already cleaned, work from the top slat to the bottom slat.
Make a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water to remove stuck-on grime or stains. Pull a clean sock over your hand and soak it in the cleaning solution. Wring it out until the sock is no longer soaking wet. With the sock covering your hand, run over each blind blade firmly. Rub away the stains using slight pressure, but not much since it can cause the blind slats to bend. Allow for complete drying by leaving the blinds open.
If your vinyl or aluminium blinds are in the kitchen, they may require a thorough cleaning owing to oil, residue, and persistent dust. Remove the blinds from the window and soak them in a bathtub filled with warm water, dish soap, and a cup of baking soda. Allow it to soak for an hour before rinsing with warm water. Wipe away any excess dirt or dust and finish by drying them thoroughly. However, if the grime seems too stubborn, you can always hire expert house cleaning services to do it for you.
White blinds can be damaged by sunlight, turning them yellow with time. To clean them, mix 2 or 3 cups of liquid bleach in a bathtub filled with cold water. Remove the blinds from the window and soak them for about 10 minutes in the bleach solution. Put on rubber gloves and wipe the bleach solution off each slat with a sponge. Rinse the blinds completely and put them outside to dry or use an old towel to dry them. Before doing this, consult the manufacturer’s instructions so that you can prevent damages.
Blinds that are really filthy can be hosed down outside. Remove your blinds and place them on a mat or rug outside. Fill a bucket halfway with soapy water and set it aside. Scrub both sides of the blinds with a scrub brush or sponge dipped in the solution. Rinse the blinds on both sides with a garden hose. Rehang them after drying them with a towel.
