Your kid’s favorite plaything can quickly turn into your biggest nightmare because slimes are not so cute once they get stuck onto your carpet. Every adult knows how important it is to maintain clean carpets at home because they play a crucial role when it comes to keeping your house clean and smelling good. Slime can be an easy toy to keep your kids engaged for a long time, but you might have to spend an even longer tie scraping it off from your carpets if you do not know the right technique to get the job done. So let us see how to tackle the slime monster in the easiest possible way.
What is slime actually made of?
Slime is made of ingredients that do not go that well with carpets. There are different types of slimes available in the market, like the glow-in-the-dark ones, spider web, galaxy, and rainbow glitter. But the base ingredients remain the same, which are glue and food coloring. It also includes water and starch. The glue makes the slime stick onto the fibers of your carpet and the food coloring has a high chance of staining them as well. In total, once it gets stuck to your carpets, it can be pretty hard to get it out. Instead of resorting to highly toxic solutions like using WD40 (water-displacing spray that also removes grime and grease), opt for more natural ways to get the slime out of your carpets.
How to get slime out of your carpets?
Now let’s get to the actual cleaning part. Below given are some of the most effective cleaning ingredients that are proven to be effective when it comes to cleaning the slime stains from your carpet.
1. Hydrogen Peroxide
In order to do this cleaning hack, you will need a spray bottle, some warm water, a sponge, a dry cloth, and duh, Hydrogen Peroxide. To half a cup of warm water, add four tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and give it a good mix. Now spray it on top of the slime and rub it with a sponge. You can put in some elbow grease so that the melted slime gets off of the carpet fibers. Spray more hydrogen peroxide if needed and continue the process. Once the slime comes off, clean the area with water and dab it with a dry cloth to get the excess water out.
2. Baking Soda and Vinegar
The acetic acid present in vinegar can be your best friend when it comes to melting away the slime from carpets. You will need a blunt scraping tool, baking soda, vinegar, a vacuum, a sponge, and a bucket of warm water. Add two cups of white vinegar into the bucket of warm water and mix it. Take some of this mixture and add it to a spray bottle. Scrape off as much slime from the carpet as possible with the scraping tool. Sprinkle the baking soda on top of the stain and spray the vinegar solution on top of it. Scrub the stain with a sponge until it is completely removed.
3. Citrus Solvent
Instead of settling for the commercial cleaning products which are of very high strength, you can use a citrus solvent and DIY the rest. This won’t damage your carpets like the commercial ones. But test it in an inconspicuous area of your carpet just to be sure. Apply the citrus solvent as it is, in a small quantity, to the area where the stain is, after scraping away the excess stain with a scraping tool. Wait for as long as what is mentioned in the instructions. Start blotting the area with a sponge and clean the latter occasionally.
4. Rubbing alcohol
Also known as isopropyl alcohol, rubbing alcohol comes in pretty handy when it comes to removing the slime stains from your carpet. But be careful of the alcohol staining your carpet, so do a patch test before going all in. Blot the stain with undiluted rubbing alcohol with the help of a sponge. You can repeat the process for as long as you need until the stain completely comes off. Once done, dab the area with a dry cloth or let it air dry.
5. Club soda
Carbonic acid present in club soda makes it eligible to become a mild cleansing agent. You can use it to remove the slime from your carpet. All you have to do is spray the club soda on the slime stain and let it sit for some time. You can blot the area with a dry cloth until it is not wet anymore. If none of these steps work, it is better to let professional carpet cleaners do the job for you.
