We are familiar with the importance of cleaning the kitchen and keeping it as tidy as possible. Not only for retrieving the bond money but also to keep away pests and maintain hygiene. When we prepare for kitchen cleaning, we mainly focus on walls, floor and countertops. There is one place we often forget, kitchen cabinets where we keep spices, grains, cereals etc.
Why is it Important?
If unattended, they could be a safe haven for pests. Not to mention spills causing fungi infection, oil, dust and dirt accumulation and more. The sticky patches can host germs and harmful bacteria making our kitchen a hygiene disaster.
Deep Cleaning
Make it a habit and deep clean the kitchen cabinets at regular intervals. If required, take help and try to get it done when we can actually keep away from the kitchen. If you feel it is not an easy one, feel free to take professional help.
Use an anti-bacterial wipe
Let us start with cleaning the cabinet handles first. Because most of the time, we deal with it using oily hands during kitchen activities. Every ingredient in cooking somehow manages to reach these handles too. Because our hands get a share of them and our cooking essentials are stored in these cabinets.
We can treat the handles properly using an anti-bacterial wipe. Wipe clean at least 2-3 times per week. Make sure that there is no oily residue left.
This method will also work well when dealing with the kitchen cabinet exteriors.
Plan and Execute
Categorise and organise properly
It would be unwise to deal with all the cabinets at once if you are cleaning them on your own. It may take a lot of time just to empty them and put things back. If we attend to them one by one, the whole process will be easy and much more effective.
Attend one or two cabinets at a time based on the time you are able to spend. Create a checklist and plan accordingly. Make sure that you complete a full cycle every 2 weeks. Give special attention to cabinets where we store spices and oils. Because spills will more in those areas and they regular and proper cleaning.
Cleaning the Cabinet Exteriors
Fingerprints, greasy stains, spice stains etc can give us a hard time while cleaning the kitchen cabinet exteriors.
Use a proper duster and clean the area of any easy to remove dirt. Then damp clean cloth with water and wipe clean the doors and handles. Use a proper cleaning solution and wipe clean the dirt and oily mess.
Rinse the cleaning sponge / cloth in warm water, and wipe clean with cabinet exteriors. Use a dry cloth and wipe clean the wet exteriors along with any remaining dirt.
Make sure to select a cleaning solution based on the type of material used in kitchen cabinets.
Cleaning the Cabinet Interiors
Empty the cabinets fully before attempting this part. There is a good chance that pests have found their home in one of them. If you are afraid of pests, either prepare to face them or consider taking professional help. Because cockroaches and spiders can give a really hard time to some people.
Once we empty the cabinet, use a duster to clean it properly. Then wipe clean using a cleaning solution and a damp cloth. Wipe the interiors with a dry cloth because damp and dark areas can not only attract pests but also can contribute to fungus growth.
Keep the cabinet doors open for around 30 minutes and try to treat the whole room with sunlight. Sunlight is a great remedy for fungus and a good natural sanitiser.
Before replacing the containers back into the cabinet, make sure that it is clean and dry. Fix cracks so that pests cannot make use of them.
