Do you know that we take it for granted when it comes to many items used in our kitchen? We simply do not care or fear about them the way we should be. And this could prove disastrous if it goes unchecked.

According to various studies, our kitchen sponge could have as high as 10 million bacteria per inch. It is just one item and we have plenty of such cases in a regular kitchen. And we are using this piece to clean our dishware in which food is served.

Expert cleaning services always recommend regular cleaning, inspection, and safety checks for items used in a kitchen. We can do a lot of them ourselves if we have enough patience and time.

Check for Bad Smells

If something in your kitchen is smelling bad, attend to it immediately. If it is a small item like a washing sponge, brush or scrubber, replace it without thinking twice. They could have accumulated dirt, food remains, and oil from continuous use. Once the smell is bad enough, it is time to say goodbye and get a new one in action.

Don’t invest in “ Do It Yourselves “ tips and make it last longer. Food poison is a serious business and we do not want it to happen in our households. Such simple tips are meant for regular cleaning. Not for items that have gone past their service life.

Keep Cleaning Tools Safe

Always try to assign a specific item like a cleaning brush to only one purpose. The brush or scrubber that is used to clean dishware is not supposed to be used for cleaning anywhere else. In fact, we should keep a dedicated set of brushes, sponges, cloths, and scrubbers for cleaning the dishware alone. They are the tools that we use to treat the plates and glasses which serve food. Let us keep it tidy and hygienic.

If we accidentally used one of them to clean a food spill, do not employ it any longer for cleaning the dishware.

No Cross Purpose Use

Cross-purpose tools are great breeding sites for bacteria and germs. And can cause an impact on our health in a bad way. This is also applicable for knives and tools that deal with raw meat. Keep a specific set of tools for that single purpose.

Make use of disposable paper towels and single-use dry clothes for effective management. These are very effective as long as our home waste management is good. Disposable towels and paper will ensure that the impurity is gone once and for all from the kitchen. This will improve the total hygiene condition of the kitchen and avoid any possible infection.

It is good to have a nice supply of such disposable towels for kitchen and general home use.

Replace Them Regularly

Do not wait for the towels, sponge, cleaning cloths, scrubbers, brushes etc to get too dirty before replacing them. Clean and sanitise them regularly. Use daily visual inspection to make sure that they remain clean and without fungi or other impurities.

No matter what, good or bad, replace them at regular intervals. This can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly according to how we use the item.
